What’s the story?

I write about wine, beer, and spirits at TheWineBaron.com. Wine is a wonderful world! Now I’m writing a separate beer blog as well.
After tasting several brews from Sleeping Giant Brewing out of Thunder Bay last year, I literally asked if they wanted to work together, and voila. I’m not only blogging craft beer, I’m helping promote it. I help them get the word out to LCBO beer ambassadors across Ontario.
What Makes Sleeping Giant Beers So Awesome
☞ Outstanding beer starts with good water. The Lake Superior waters surrounding Thunder Bay are pristine, clean, and pure.
☞ The brewery is passionately committed to hand-crafting ales and lagers that are fresh and authentic. Hand-crafted means: small batches, just 4 or 5 ingredients (no chemicals), and natural techniques.
☞ Passion, love, and talent. These qualities come through in the beers. And a note about talent… The brewers here are really good at what they do. Like a good chef! These are great beers, and I’m proud to be associated with them.
Some favorite Sleeping Giant brews:
Northern Logger is an amber colored award-winning Golden Ale. Lightly hopped with Bravo hops. Not too far in any flavor direction or bitterness. Just right for the palate that wants an interesting beer without wrestling with IBU’s or other features. It’s easy drinking and smooth.

White Out is a light colored Hazy IPA that charms my socks off. I’m not normally an IPA before anything else guy. But I’m game for an interesting brew with a bit of flavor and hops going on. This brew is amazing that way. Some nice hop treatment, but in its place for the seeker of smooth. Yet my IPA buddies love it too. They’re gaga over it. Nice tropical fruit notes. Goes great with pizza and other fun fare.
White Out ABV: 6.1%; IBU: 25 Flavour Profile: Full-bodied, smooth mouthfeel, very fruity with lower bitterness. Yeast: Vermont Ale. Malt: Superior Pale Oat Malt Wheat Oat flakes. Hops: Mosaic Citra Columbus.

Skull Rock Stout
Skull Rock Stout is dark brew that’s lovingly brewed from Oatmeal along with six different malts. It has a toasted smoothness and amazing body. A lot like a Guinness, but bearing that unmistakable craft beer freshness. The brewer uses a single aromatic English hop in the process. This is a pleasing brew with complexity and balance. There’s a slight sweetness to this stout with rich notes of grain and dark chocolate.
Skull Rock Stout ABV: 5.1%; IBU: 32 Flavour Profile: Roasty & toasty, coffee, chocolate, strong but balanced bitterness. Yeast: English Ale. Malt: Superior Pale Crystal 120 Roasted Barley Black Malt Chocolate Malt Munich Rolled Oats. Hops: Galena.
